What the OTA Fee Actually Costs You — With the Numbers

A guest service fee, a host commission and a payment margin. Here is where each one lands, using each platform's own published figures.

This is not an argument that the marketplaces are villains. It is an explanation of where a meaningful slice of every booking dollar goes, using numbers each platform publishes itself, because most guests have never seen it laid out and it changes how you book.

Three fees, two of them invisible

On a typical marketplace booking there are up to three separate takes. The guest service fee appears at checkout, so you can see it: Airbnb's help center puts it at 14.1% to 16.5% of the booking subtotal. The host-side commission is invisible to you but is priced into the nightly rate: Vrbo publishes a 5% commission plus 3% payment processing. Booking.com does not publish a single universal rate at all — commission varies by agreement, so no honest article can give you a number for it. Nobody is hiding any of this; it is simply spread across screens neither party reads closely.

What the arithmetic actually shows

Take the guest service fee on its own, because it is the only one you pay directly. On a $4,000 subtotal, Airbnb's published range works out to roughly $564 to $660 added at checkout. Book the same stay directly and that line does not exist. The important caveat is that this only holds if the nightly rate is the same on both sides — a fee comparison is not a price comparison, and anyone showing you a single tidy savings figure has quietly assumed the rate away. Our calculator shows a range for exactly that reason.

Why we can hold the rate

Taking the card and running the booking costs us a single-digit percentage of the reservation. A marketplace guest fee is a double-digit one. That gap is the whole reason we can hold the nightly rate rather than raise it to absorb a commission. We publish our exact cost on the fee page instead of here, because it depends on the payment plan a home is on and we would rather keep one current figure in one place than a stale one in a blog post.

How to check us

Do not take our word for it. Price the same dates on a marketplace, screenshot the total at checkout with all fees loaded, and compare it line by line with the total here. Every figure in this article links to the platform's own help page — read them yourself.

The one honest caveat

Marketplaces provide something real: a dispute process backed by a company with a balance sheet, and a review corpus built from verified stays. Booking direct means trusting an operator instead. Nomad Vacation Rentals LLC was founded in 2026, so we have no review corpus to point you at and we are not going to manufacture one. What we can show you is a total with nothing hidden behind it, policies published in full, a card taken on a checkout we never see, and a named person who answers for the decision. Judge that on its merits.
